Funeral Insurance
Funeral insurance isn’t really like any other insurance policy you’ll have. Most insurance policies are taken out because of the “what if” something happens, but for funeral insurance, on the other hand, it’s only a matter of time before it will be needed. It’s not a case of “what if” you die, it’s definitely a case of “when” you die. Death and taxes are the only two things you can be sure about in this life, remember? I know, it’s not a nice thing to think about and you’ve probably got a whole lotta living to do, but it will happen so you might as well be ready.
Funeral Insurance
So is funeral insurance a good idea? Well, I should say so. If you have adequate funeral insurance cover it simply means that all of your funeral expenses will be covered, and you won’t be relying on your grieving relatives and loved ones to cough up the readies when the time comes. It can be bad enough losing a loved one anyway, but then having to pay for the privilege is a bit of a liberty, don’t you think?
Funeral Insurance Cover
So how much funeral insurance should you have, and what specifically should it cover. Of course, you need to make sure that you shop around a bit and read the small print (even if it means getting out a magnifying glass). Funerals are an expensive business, well, they can be very expensive or you can have cheaper options (which is highly likely, especially if you don’t sort it out yourself). Traditional burials can be much more expensive than a direct cremation, for example. Think about the kind of send off you want and how much it’s all going to cost. If you want to be ceremoniously paraded to the cemetery in a horse drawn carriage with four shiny black horses and a full brass band, it’s gonna cost ya.
You need to cover:
- Funeral home expenses
- embalming and visiting costs (optional depending on the type of funeral you choose and how quickly you are going to be waiting)
- cemetery plot and liner
- cost of casket or container (hardwood caskets, for example, are very expensive, but cheaper containers are available for cremations)
- transport (including limousine)
- service
- party afterwards – alright, alright, if you want to be boring and proper we’ll call it a “wake”, although it seems a bit of a funny name to me, because a-wake is definitely not what you’ll be.
If you do have adequate funeral insurance cover (and millions of Americans have sensibly decided that it’s a good idea) you can make sure that everything is taken care of in good time. You’ll have time to shop around, you can even pre-pay some of the funeral arrangements, choose a plot, choose a casket, pick your own songs, that sort of thing. It really does make an already harrowing experience much more bearable for those left behind, who don’t have to make decisions or try to think of what you would like the best, it’ll already be sorted and paid for. Go on, it really is the least you could do, don’t you think?
